Pelham Bay is located in the northeastern section of the Bronx near Pelham Bay Park, the largest public park in New York City. The area is most likely named after Thomas Pell, who in 1654 acquired by treaty from the Siwonoy Indians, a huge tract of land covering portions of the Bronx and Westchester from Long Island Sound to the Hutchinson River. The area became populated after the completion of the IRT terminal (No. 6 train) at Pelham Bay, an hour’s commute into Manhattan. Family-owned shops and restaurants can be found on Westchester, Buhre and Crosby Avenues. The area is home to fine public and parochial schools. In the summer, Orchard Beach and City Island are a short distance away for fun in the sun.
