Spuyten Duyvil is a steep ridge south of Riverdale, overlooking the entry of the Harlem River in the Hudson. The Indians called it "Shorrack-kappock", which is why there is a Kappock Street in the area today. Spuyten Duyvil is the name the Dutch used. Washington Irving attributes it to Peter Stuyvesant's trumpeter, who swore to row across the rough stretch where the waters met "in spite of the devil". Many cooperative buildings in this lovely neighborhood have tremendous views of the Hudson and/or Harlem Rivers. Bus and train transportation are conveniently located in Spuyten Duyvil giving it easy access to Manhattan or Westchester, New York.
